Below you will find information on pulley lights that are available for sale.

Pulley Lights
aka Rise and Fall Lights

I began  my career of creating and selling pulley lights shortly after opening my original company Architects & Heroes in 1990.  This blog was created to inform my clients on the timeless design and functionality of these pulley lights.  Below you will find information on how to order.  Each light is customized to fit your interior needs based on ceiling height and placement in your home.  Therefore, it is important that I communicate directly with each client. Orders can be placed by email loblollygoods@att.net or calling 512-775-5490

A brief history.

Lighting and the history of lighting has long been of interest to me.  I have always been attracted to the precision machining of antique lighting fixtures and hardware.  Where at one time these lighting components were important to the overall design of the fixture, slowly they were hidden and replaced by inexpensive and much less attractive counterparts.

Interior industrial design accents are making their way into many home environments today. Accent pieces that create curiosity of origin that once were hidden behind a clock face or machine casing are being re-purposed into all sorts of sculptural and utilitarian designs. Pulleys and gears are such items that create interesting features and design elements. I mix these components with other interesting reclaimed items to create a fully functioning counter balance lighting system.

"Archimedes is given credit for developing the first complex pulley around 250 BC, but the pulley had been invented years before in the area between Europe and Asia. No one knows who the inventor of the first pulley was."

Pulley lights have been around since the 19th century. Early pulley system lighting allowed lanterns to be lowered to refill the oil reservoir. Bradley and Hubbard created some elegant design applications. Another admired lighting designer and inventor was James Hinks and Sons. In early oil and electrical lighting, the illumination was so poor that lowering the light was necessary to see the task at hand. Imagine being the first house on the block with electric lights after Edison flipped the first switch. Having all those exposed wires and light bulbs was very fashionable at the time, along with the noisy generator in your basement.

For over a decade I  have taken this unique style of lighting and have added design elements  from 19th century utilitarian components.  Parts from 19th Century Elevator Doors, Gas Lamps, Steamer Ship Compass Brackets, French Clock Armalou, and Grandfather Clock Weights all make up the uniqueness of each pulley light fixture.

How do they work? Each fixture has a canister or egg that is weighted with either heavy scrap metal or molded pot metal. This weight works as a clutch when combined with the weight at the bottom of the fixture.  Each fixture is hand assembled after components are individually weighed. Collectively this process allows the fixture to stop at any desired point.

A couple notes to remember when ordering.

* Listed at the end of the blog is the pivot we created that must be used for hanging the lights on vaulted ceilings.

*  Our lights are made for a 9' ceiling BUT the lighting can be extended to accommodate any ceiling height higher than 9'. This is done by adding a longer brass pipe between the ceiling plate and the top pulley system. If you have 8' ceilings we can offer the three styles, the single simple pendant, the craftsman series or the nouveau series.  Please realize the distance between the two pulleys will be about 3-5 inches less than what is pictured on the fixtures in this website.

* Anything higher than 9' will have to be rewired and an extension pipe will be added below the ceiling plate and top pulley system.  Extending fixtures costs $30 per socket. If your ceiling is higher than 12' there is an additional charge of $95 per 3' of brass extension pipe and solid brass joiner balls.  Recently we installed one of our fixtures on a 16' ceiling as shown below.  This fixture required 3 extension pipes and 2 brass joiner balls which we tapped and threaded together.

* Shipping is via UPS ground/fully insured. We do often ship internationally and will provide a shipping rate upon request. Typical domestic shipping costs is approximately 10-15% of the value, depending which UPS zone you reside in.

* After receiving the order I will contact you via email with an invoice after the fixture has been built and is ready to ship. I accept all major credit\ debit cards and personal checks.  Once payment is received you will immediately be sent a UPS tracking number for your parcels.

* The sockets used on my fixtures will accommodate standard edison, LED and CFS type bulbs.  Wattage recommendation for incandescent bulbs is 60watts.

*How low should your fixture hang?

Since my fixtures are adjustable you have some room to play with, which is part of the attractive feature to the pulley light.  But here are some guidelines to follow.
Over a table. The recommended height to hang a fixture above a table is 28 to 32 inches, but the fixture can be hung slightly higher or lower depending on personal preference, fixture size and ceiling height.
Hallway fixtures.  approximately 8' off the floor.
Stairwell. I recommend at least 18 to 24 inches of clearance between the bottom of a fixture and the height of a taller person. While less may do the job, visually it will cause most people to feel the need to duck when walking under the fixture!
Above an Island. Typically pendants should be placed 28 to 34 inches above the countertop, or 72 inches above the floor.

Pendant Lights

Simple single pendant lighting. The design of these pendants are great for those smaller spaces and because of the single wire hanging construction this light can be extended to fit any ceiling height from 8' or higher. Many of my customers opt to use 2 or 3 of these lights over their kitchen islands instead of a larger heavier looking fixture.
